The Fylingdales Group of Artists

My home is a small village on the edge of the North York Moors where I also have a studio in an old converted barn with fine moorland views. I paint  landscape and this is fuelled  by my passion for running and hiking.

I originally studied Human Biology which led to a research post in the paediatric department of a London Hospital. I then went on to do a postgraduate certificate in education. I taught in primary schools in the UK, including  Devon and North Yorkshire as well as in International schools in Madrid and Bangkok. It was on returning from Thailand at the end of 1996 and having filled many sketchbooks with drawings from my travels, that I fulfilled my long-held desire to go to art school. This took the form of a full-time foundation course at York College.

I juggled school teaching and painting for a number of years and finally went self-employed artist in 2006. I have exhibited in many galleries and arts centres and have taken part in North Yorkshire Open Studios for the last 16 years. My work is held in private collections worldwide.

Artist’s Statement Sue Slack.

Recently I have been researching new ways of working. I spent the winter in the Highlands of Scotland and my entries into this year’s Fylingdales Artists’ exhibition are inspired by that magnificent scenery.

I am enjoying exploring new processes, although my aim as ever is to capture something of the spirit of the place.
