Membership of 22 artists.

Lowe Bill

Resigned 2004    Died.2006

A self taught artist, was born in Wharfdale, Yorkshire, where he painted for many years. he moved to Scarborough in 1965 and still feels that the Greater Scarborough area is one of the finest painting areas in the country. An active member of the Group and other North Eastern Societies where he would regularly exhibit. His seascapes and landscapes are in many private and corporate collections at home and abroad. Sadly due to ill health Bill has reluctantly resigned from the Group in 2004.

After a long battle with illness, Bill Lowe died of an heart attack at the end of June, 2006. Bill was born in Wharfedale where he later painted his airy pictures of the Dales before moving to Scarborough in 1965. He enjoyed membership of art societies in Ilkley, Otley and the West Riding before leaving for the coast and the greater Scarborough area, where he joined St. Martin’s Group which later amalgamated with the harbour side Group. He was elected to join the Fylingdales Group of Artists in 1976 and achieved success with his work in both watercolour and oils largely inspired by the Spa town and its environs. He became a very reliable, valued and quietly enthusiastic member. His seascapes and landscapes are to be found in private and corporate collections at home and abroad. Bill’s painting and friendship will be missed by us all.

Taylor Will

Born 15/06/1942            Died 15/09/1998.

Training:- Middlesbrough College of Art 1957 - 1961

Personal statement:- My subject matter is mainly landscape; the landscape of Danby dale where I live, and the surrounding North Yorkshire Moors. Northumberland, especially Holy Island, holds a special fascination too. The inevitable seasonal changes, night and day and the extremes of weather, bringing with them endless variations of light, colour and mood, provide the inspiration and focus for my painting and printmaking. While landscape features in my linocuts, I am occasionally drawn to the dramatic imagery of Industrial Teesside or the unique and fascinating shapes of Yorkshire cobbles. Their boldness of form and colour offer limitless possibilities for the medium of printmaking. (Buried.  Church of St.Hilda, Danby, N.Yorkshire.)

A prominent Yorkshire artist was a founder member of the Yorkshire Water Colour Society, a member of the Society of Architectural Illustrators. Born in Manchester in 1930, his varied career, after an apprenticeship in engineering, including draughtsman, Outward Bound Instructor and art teacher.  He became a professional artist in 1976, based originally in Staithes and later in Whitby. Hunter Tony Died February 2015

Originally from Beverley and then Hornsea, he moved to Easingwold in 1984. Tony started painting while living in Hornsea and was secretary and later vice President of the Hornsea Art Society. That society was formed by the late prestigious Harry Hudson Rodmell and whose president was Colin Verity. Their influence has been a major influence and inspiration in his work.

His subjects were the fast disappearing old villages and towns of this country trying to get a sense of atmosphere before we become a land of one large piece of concrete.

He also exhibited with Francis Iles Fine Art in Rochester.

Tony Hunter had a lively interest in history and engineering, and a deep love of the Ridings of Yorkshire. These combine together with a touch of humour to show the unitiated the beautiful lines of motorcars of the 30’s and 40’s, and the unspoilt villages and countryside of the Ridings.

Dealtry William

17th April 1915 -        Died 31st December 2007

An impressionist artist whose spontaneity of touch took a lifetime of practice and observation to perfect, William Dealtry who has died aged 92, was a landscape painter who used both oil and watercolour. His subjects were sky, moor-land, mountain, sea and the shadows cast upon them. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Watercolour Society and was a member of The Fylingdales Group of Artists. He was born in York, trained as a chemist and worked at Rowntrees’ chocolate factory in the research department. He studied at the York School of Art and was a pupil and great friend of Yorkshire Artists Fred Lawson, who for many years illustrated and wrote a column in The Dalesman. He loved to look at pictures and talk about painting to fellow artists, friends and family and he was a great admirer of Edward Seago. William married Flora Macpherson in 1940, moving from York to Burton Fleming in East Yorkshire and later to Pickering where he taught art and ran a picture framing and craft shop. His paintings reflected his love of the moors and sea with subjects mainly of North Yorkshire and its rugged coastline, but the North West Coast of Scotland was his second love and he spent many of his holidays painting in the Scottish hills around Gairloch, West Rossshire, which was the home of his wife’s parents. He also included many parts of Britain, Europe and New Zealand.Wherever he went he would always take a sketch pad with him and his two minute sketches would be transposed to canvas on return to his studio. William never stopped painting and his enthusiasm remained undiminished throughout his life, and after suffering a stroke which left him paralysed down his right side, he struggled to adapt to painting with his left hand. After William’s stroke Flora, his wife for 65 happy years, nursed him lovingly until her death from cancer in 2005. He died peacefully in his sleep leaving four children, a son Michael and three daughters, Ann, Jennifer and Susan, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. An exhibition of his paintings will be held later this year in the Brian Sinfield Gallery, Burford, Oxon, to celebrate his lifetime of painting.

John Carter. D.A. (Edin), N.D.D., A.T.D.

25th February 1931-  16th April 2007

Born East Cleveland 1931 and trained at the Middlesbrough & Edinburgh Colleges of Art where he graduated in 1952. After National Service, took an Art teacher’s Diploma at King’s College, Newcastle, 1955. Later worked in Art Education for 35 years. After 15 SOLO EXHIBITIONS BY INVITATION mainly in PUBLIC ART GALLERIES, he  regularly contributed work to numerous mixed, selected, open & group exhibitions throughout U.K. His paintings may be seen in many public and private collections both at home and abroad. He worked from a purpose-built studio in Guisborough . A requiem Mass was held at Guisborough Parish Church on Monday 23rd April 2007.

Statement.    I make direct drawing responses to landscape employing a range of media and techniques; this work feeds the imagination, rouses emotions and helps to provide studio paintings, which have lives of their own, independent of the subject and with relationships of line, pattern and structure emerging from the act of looking. Each work is an adventure into the unknown and an expression of the total experience involved.
