Artist's Statement
Kate Smith is a contemporary marine artist living on the North Yorkshire coast. Her paintings depict coastal scenes, traditional boats and marine life, painted in vibrant oils. Kate has exhibited in various galleries countrywide and has paintings in private collections both here and abroad.
Taking inspiration from in and around Whitby, and the coastline where she lives, Kate draws on her formal sculptural background, which has led her to develop an impasto style. Building with thick layers of oil paint in exaggerated colours, applied with a palette knife to give light, texture and atmosphere to her paintings. This technique has become a fundamental aspect of her pieces along with a love of local craftsman-built traditional fishing boats and local marine life that are often the subjects of her work.
