Don was born in Scarborough and received a short formal training at the local School of Art before he joined the Army for national service. This was then followed by employment in a series of jobs including railway cleaner, and also press agency photographer, before returning to art firstly as a picture framer and restorer, then as a Professional Artist.
He has exhibited with several of the leading Royal Societies, including the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Royal West of England Academy. He also exhibited regularly with the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Guild of Railway Artists, also at the International Boat Show. Several of his works are in municipal collections, including the Canadian State Marine Collection, which have also been reproduced as prints. In addition, a painting purchased by Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, is part of the permanent display, and is reproduced as a postcard.
His works are in private and corporate collections in most European Countries, as well as in America, several African States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and many other countries around the world.
Besides his fine art work, he has designed theatre stage sets for many locations round the country, he is also a part-time Lecturer in Art for the North Yorkshire C.C. Community Education Service, and he regularly demonstrates to a variety of Art Clubs and societies mainly in the North of England.
