David Howell
DAVID HOWELL PPRSMA David is a full time painter working from his studio in the Hambledon Hills north of York. He paints in watercolour and oils and subjects are primarily landscape and marine. He also well-known for his equestrian racing work and for shooting pictures and many collectors in various parts of the world know him for his Arabian paintings. David travels widely in search of new material, most recently in India and Egypt and France is almost a second home. He exhibits at national level and with a number of galleries in the UK and overseas and has had over 20 one-man shows during the course of his career.
David regularly writes articles for magazines and is the author of 2 books on painting published by Crowood Press as well as featuring in a DVD by APV Films and his courses at Staithes Art School and Dedham Hall, in Essex, are always very popular. His paintings are to be found in in locations varying from royal palaces in the Middle East to city boardrooms as well as with numerous private collectors across the world. He is a member and past-president of the Royal Society of Marine Artists
STATEMENT I’m always happy to be working en plein air whenever possible and believe that however convenient modern digital devices are for recording images to be worked on later, nothing beats actually being on the spot and experiencing first-hand the subtle changes of light, colours and tones that make it worth occasionally getting wet, cold or even too hot. Painting isn’t about making a faithful copy of a particular location but about creating something that is painterly, something that looks good when hung on a wall and something that allows the viewer to see what you want them to see.
