Andrew Cheetham
Elected 2023
Andrew Cheetham was born in Heywood, Manchester in 1971.
He studied Art at Manchester Polytechnic, Liverpool John Moores University and Central St. Martins College of Art.
He lives and works in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where he had a studio in one of the old baiting sheds on the harbour. He has been painting the sea and documenting Scarborough's declining Fishing Industry since 2000.
He was selected as Artist in Residence at Knaresborough Castle and in Rosedale Abbey on the North York Moors. His work is held in both private and public collections.
My Artwork could be described as documentary in that I prefer to work from life.
In the past I focused on former centres of Industry and Commerce, the grandeur and dramatic beauty that I found in the physical remains of our Industrial heritage. I began documenting Scarborough's Fishing Industry in 2000 and converted an empty baiting shed on the harbour's West Pier into a studio. Whilst at first the fishermen were wary of me they became used to me drawing them at work and I have accompanied them out on their boats many times.
Throughout this time the sea has been a constant in my work, constantly changing, constantly inspiring
