Hawley, Denton:- B. 1880 D. 1954. Made life member 1953. Landscape painter and etcher, born in Sheffield the son of a bookkeeper. He is recorded in the 1901 census as a black and white scraperboard artist. Work held in Padstow Museum. Married Winifred in 1912. Originally from Sheffield. Resigned 1939. Harry Denton Hawley was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the 'West Riding Divisional Engineers”, a Territorial Force unit on the 14th Ocotober 1915. Landed in France on 12th September 1916, initially they went to Eygpt before moving to France. Officer harry applied for his war medal in 1922, his address at the time being Bloomswell, Robin Hood's Bay.
Pickard, Louise B. Hull. 12th December 1865 D. 6th June 1928 Was an English painter of still life, landscapes and portraits. Studied at the Slade School of Art 1898-1900 and then studied sculpture in Paris . Royal Academy on eight occasions between 1909 -1928 . N.E.A.C., Goupil Group. Studio held in in Chelsea, London. Collections Fernens Art Gallery, Cartwright Hall, Tate Gallery. Died in London. Memorial exhibition at Alpine Club Gallery in 12928

Walker, Ethel. D.B.E., A.R.A., N.E.A.C.( Dame) B. 9th June 1861, Edinburgh. D. 2nd March 1951. Studied at Glasgow School of Art. First woman member of the New English Art Club. Exhibited Royal Academy, Lefevre gallery, represented Britain at the Venice Biennale four times, in 1922,1924,192 B. 1862 8 and 1930. Resigned during 1939 -1945 war.

Lowe, George Theodore: Montrose House, Robin Hood's Bay D.1942
He did have art training in Antwerp in the 1880s and he painted, sketched and exhibited throughout his life. He was chiefly a landscape watercolourist and painted mainly views in and around Robin Hood's Bay. He signed his work Geo T Lowe.
His day job was manager of the Yorkshire Penny Bank in Huddersfield. He lived in Huddersfield, but always summered in Robin Hood's Bay, where his constant address was Montrose House, Fisher Head. He moved there permanently in 1934 when his address changed to Fernleigh, Fisher Head.
He was also a keen mountaineer, walker and caver and was the first President of the Yorkshire Rambler's Club. He was originally from Leeds, and in the 1890s was a member of the Leeds Savage Club - an odd society that promoted art, bohemianism and mountaineering. Owen Bowen was also a member.

Grey, Edith Mrs F.R.A.I. (nee Durham)B. 8th December 1863. D. 15th November1944.
As well as being an artist she was also an anthropologist and writer who is best known for anthropological accounts of life in Albania in the early 20th century. She attended Bedford College (1878-1882), followed by the Royal Academy of Arts. She exhibited widely and contributed a number of detailed drawings to the amphibia and reptiles volume of the Cambridge Natural History (published 1899.

Leo's father, James Ulric Walmsley, was a gifted artist who spent the last sixty years of his life in Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire, England. His paintings of this area in oils and watercolours are now greatly appreciated and much in demand.
Ulric trained as an architect in Ireland. He then worked on church decoration before undergoing art training, which included studying under Stanhope Forbes in Newlyn, Cornwall.

Terry, Joseph. Alfred R.B.A., B. 1872 D.1939. Member of The Staithes Group of Artists. Born in York, studied at York School of Art and in Paris. Exhibited in R.A., R.B.A., R.O.I., and in Paris. Held a one-man exhibition in Carfax Gallery in 1913. Elected R.B.A. 1924. Lived in Staithes, near Whitby. Works held in Pannett Art Gallery, Whitby, York and Paris. Death of Joseph Terry noted in the minutes ,died 20th March 1939.

Bowen, Owen:- R.O.I. Resigned 1966 Vice-President The Royal Cambrian Academy of Art B. 1873 – D. 1967. Elected President, Hon Exhibitor. Member of The Staithes Group of Artists. Born in Beeston Hill, Leeds son of an accountant. Self taught artist, exhibited locally from the age of 15. Established the Leeds School of Painting which he directed for 30 years. Exhibited at the R.A. regularly from 1892 and also R.O.I. , elected Member in 1916. Illustrated several books on Yorkshire by Edmund Bogg, notably the History of Richmonshire.

Cooper, K. Miss
Bateson, Edith .H. Miss. B.1891 D. 1937. Elected 1928 Resigned 1935 Studied at the Royal Academy schools under Edward Lantern. Won three silver medals for her sculptures. Later on Bateson seems to have moved on to painting, there is a tenuous link to the Staithes group. Exhibited at the Royal Academy four times also at Walker Gallery and numerous provincial galleries.

Hill, Rowland. :- B.1873 D.1952. Born in Halifax, studied at Halifax school of At, Bradford Technical College and Horkkomer's School at Bushley. Exhibited at R.A. from 1897, at the Paris Salon, and Venetian International. Lived at Ellerby Lodge. Rowland Hill was an early member of the Staithes Group. Apart from the Royal Academy and Walker Gallery in Liverpool, he concentrated on exhibiting in the major Yorkshire galleries. Wife Dorothy Turner, who came from a prosperous Sheffield family. The married couple moved to the small village of Ellerby where they lived for the remainder of their long lives. Work held in Imperial War Museum, Leeds, Wakefield, Whitby, Harrogate and several other public galleries. Resigned 1940.

Rands, Angus, Bernard. B. 1922. D. 1985. was born in Menston, near Ilkley, but lived the latter part of his life in Harrogate. In his forties he quit sales job to become a full time painter. He specialised in painting town and landscapes, particularly of the Yorkshire Dales - to which he had a particular affinity, and the Yorkshire Wolds. He wrote articles for The Artist and Leisure Painter and led painting classes for adults at venues across Yorkshire, including Robin Hood's Bay and in Grassington.

Lowe, Bill B. 1922. D.2006. Elected Member 1976. Resigned 2004. Painter of mainly watercolours, coastal scenes of Whitby and Scarborough. An active member of the Group and other North Eastern Societies where he would regularly exhibit. His seascapes and landscapes are in many private and corporate collections at home and abroad. Sadly due to ill health Bill has reluctantly resigned from the Group in 2004.

He started painting in 1956 and is self taught, concentrating mainly on oil painting. He was the Hon. Vice President of Scarborough Art Gallery, and President of St. Martin's Art Club in Scarborough.

Born in North East England, where he spent most of his life, Will, was known especially for linocuts, produced on a Columbian platen press in his studio at his home on the North York Moors. Many of his pictures reflect the moors, coastline and contrasting landscape of the industry in his local area, but Will also found inspiration in the varied landscape right across the North of England and Scotland. It has been said that his work has a quietness about it: a gentleness which grew out of his love for this part of the world.

Founder member of the Yorkshire Water Colour Society, his varied career, after an apprenticeship in engineering, including draughtmanship, Outward Bound Instructor and art teacher. turning to professional artist in 1976. Exhibited with Royal Society of Marine Artists. Work held in Harrogate, York, Sheffield, Scarborough & Birkenhead. Produced artwork for The National Trust in Yorkshire, Northumberland, Cumbria and Cambridge.

Binns, Geoff. A Yorkshireman , Geoff was an RAF Officer and a Pilot in the Second World War. He became disabled at 50 years old when he entered York College of Art. He held his first one man exhibition in the new College Building. In recent years until 1990 he taught Art around North Yorkshire. Although no longer able to sculpt, he continues to paint portraits and Landscapes. He exhibits in and around North Yorkshire. He moved to Spain to live and continues to paint, although no longer able to exhibit with the Group.

Dealtry, William.

An impressionist arist whose spontaneity took a lifetime of practice to perfect, William Dealtry was a landscape painter who used both water colour and oil. Most of his subjects were moorland, sky, and sea and the shadows cast upon them. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Watercolour Society He was born in York and trained as a chemist, working at Rowntrees' chocolate factory in the research department. He studied at the York School of Art and was a pupil and great friend of Yorkshire artist Fred Lawson. His paintings reflected his love of the moors and sea with subjects mainly of North Yorkshire and its rugged coastline. Following a stroke in later life he struggled to adapt to painting with his left hand
Carte, John. Born 1931. D. 6th April 2007 Secretary 1994- 2005. Educated at Guisborough Grammer School, he began his art training at Middlesbrough College of Art. His art education was disrupted by two years national service in the Royal Air Force, resuming his education at Edingurgh School of Art.He won a scholarship in France, before qualifying as an art teacher. He became head of the art department at Eston Grammer School, in South Bank, near Middlesbrough, where he remained until it closed in 1973. he continued in education at the nearby South Park Sixth Form College until retirement in 1990. For 40 years he exhibited his work across the region. He married Louisa in 1956 and they had two children, Angela in 1959, and Paul in 1961.

Frazer, Hector Born 13th May 1919. D. April 13th 2013.
Hector was a farmer, the much loved, admired and respected President of Driffield Art Club. He was a founding member back in 1965 when the Club was first launched.
Hector worked in a variety of media – watercolour, oil, gouache, pastel, acrylic and clay sculpting. He taught in Further Education and gave demonstrations to art groups. He was also a judge in many art competitions and exhibitions.

Having lived in the Whitby area since childhood, Jackie now lives in an old school house in the countryside on the outskirts of the town. Trained at Bradford College of Art , Jackie works in pastel, watercolour and oil, she paints a variety of subjects, but has a particular affinity with flora and the countryside. A member of the Grape Lane gallery in Whitby where she exhibits, Jackie is also curator of the Pannett Gallery in the town, a public gallery housing an important collection of 19th century paintings.
Biglands, David. Resigned 2003 David Biglands was born in Thirsk and studied at Middlesbrough College of Art where he gained an N.D.D. After working in various studios in London as a commercial illustrator in the 1960's he returned to the North East where he gained recognition in the 1970's for paintings of local scenes, especially Whitby and the surrounding areas. In the following years he has developed different styles of work in a wide range of subjects, especially in marine work and paintings of lifeboats for special commissions for the R.N.L.I. For a number of years he has spent time in Spain and the Balearic Islands and many other Mediterranean countries gathering material where he has exhibited works that are now in private collections in Europe and further afield.

Carter, Barry, E. B.1940. Resigned 2007. Born in Nottingham and moved to East Yorkshire in the 1960's. Studied portraiture and figure painting at York School of Art. Principally known for his emotive landscape paintings in oils and acrylic. He now lives near Hull and works as a full time painter.

Sharpe, Allison. Resigned 2007 Graduating in 1989 with the M.A. (Honours) degree in Fine Art from Edinburgh University, with Edinburgh College of Art, Allison trained as an art historian and specialized in painting. While there, she exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy January Exhibition, and won several accolades, including a Sotheby Award and the Richard Demarco Painting Prize. Based in Yorkshire, Allison has exhibited in regional, national and commercial settings and received further recognition, including a Special Award in the Laing Competition.
Packham, Les. B. 1945. D. 2015. (M.B.E.) 1967 married Judy, two children:- Owen & Shelley. Exhibited in London, Yorkshire and the United States, his customers inclueded countless private collectors and corporate bodies. Upon his retirement from the police force in 1991, Mr Packham was able to devote more time to his art and taught himself how to paint watercolours by studying the techniques of the early English watercolourists.
Pybus, Christine. Present Member. Working in both oils and watercolours, with a particular love of painting plein-air seascapes, landscapes and snow scenes. Exhibiting throughout Britain, she also gives demonstrations to art societies, writes for art magazines and writes on art history.

Atkinson, Sue. B. 1949. D. 2021.In 199 she was South Yorkshiure Artist of the Year, and won numerous other prizes and awards. The subjects of her paintings are generally carefully observed scenes of everyday life, such as children playing and beach scenes.
