Drawing is of central importance to my work, both in making preliminary sketches and during the painting process. By investing a lot of time in design drawings, I am able to explore and refine the structure of the composition. Whether painting landscapes, interiors or people, I work for the most part from direct observation, in mixed media, soft pastel and oils. The experience of space, and unusual juxtapositions of shape, colour and texture are constant preoccupations. I seek to record exceptional and beautiful qualities in apparently ordinary subjects.
Exhibitions: Laing Competition, Mercer Gallery, Harrogate and Mall Galleries, London; Print Open., R.W.F.A., Bristol Art Gallery; Silver Longboat Exhibition, Darlington Art Gallery and Oslo, Norway. At the Mall Galleries, London: National Print Exhibition; New English Art Club; Pastels Today, Pastel Society; Royal Institute of British Artists.
